Chapter Eleven

Cassie took it as a good sign that her footsteps felt more solid with each mile since they’d broken camp this morning. They had two solid days of hiking behind them since the first night after her almost-plummet to certain death off the side of the mountain. Since Daniel had admitted that he thought it was his fault they hadn’t been rescued yet. It had jarred her out of the feelings she’d thought were growing between them. Until she realized that the feelings weren’t gone. They were deeper. Daniel’s ability to admit his wrong and ask her forgiveness had only strengthened her respect for him, no matter how irritated she’d been.

She’d tossed and turned that whole night after his revelation, unable to take advantage of her rest periods. Only after she’d prayed and asked God to help her figure it all out had she fallen into a brief but deep slumber. Yet several days out she was still feeling the lack of sleep; the long, long hours of constant physical exertion had worn her down. And she was still in one piece, unlike Daniel, whom she grew more certain each mile had fractured his ribs.

It would have been a shorter journey to the shores of the fjord if Daniel hadn’t been injured, if her bones and muscles still weren’t so achy from the crash. They were both relying on their mutual supply of anti-inflammatory medications, as a hot bath wasn’t an option. The thought alone of her apartment tub, filled with hot steaming water and scented bath salts, was near torture. She put thoughts of what-could-have-been out of her mind and concentrated on each step, her footprints falling alongside Daniel’s; she’d insisted he take the lead each day since he’d saved her life for the second time.

The only answer she’d discerned from her prayer time was to practice forgiveness. And yet, she wasn’t sure Daniel had anything to be forgiven for, not by her. Sure, he’d had Sean take them away from their original flight plan, but it wasn’t his fault they’d hit that weather. What hurt her most was that he hadn’t told her his concerns. She’d felt like his true partner, a trusted friend and yes, confidante. Finding out he’d held something back crushed her.

Your ego’s bruised.

It was true, and she needed to clear the air with him, but there hadn’t been a right time to approach him and tell him how she felt. They were on a tight schedule to make it to Way Point.

And she’d told him the truth—she wanted to see where Great-grandma Eugenia had perished. It was worth it, after all they’d been through. The more she thought about it, the more it seemed that it might be a blessing that they’d crashed where they had. She didn’t for one minute believe that God meant for them to crash, or for Sean to die, but Cassie knew in her heart that faith and prayer opened the door for God to bring good out of the direst situations.
